Executive Summary

This report describes the results obtained from the internal evaluation of the Semantic Multimedia Annotation Tool (SMAT) which was based on the presentation of SMAT during the KP-Lab general assembly on Tuesday October 21st in Espoo, Finland. The purpose of the internal evaluation of the SMAT is to perform a formative evaluation which focuses on how the functionalities and features of the tool support knowledge creation processes and transformation of knowledge practices. More specifically, the evaluation addresses the role of how SMAT can support trialogical learning processes and formulates recommendations for revision of tools, additional functionalities and makes suggestions for the kinds of research that can be performed on SMAT.

To validate the extent to which SMAT supports knowledge creation and transformation of practices, we employed the list of user tasks that are reported in D2.4 Driving Objectives and High-level Requirements for KP-Lab Technologies. These user tasks were based on KP-Lab theory and on results of empirical studies performed in the pedagogical work packages and provide a frame for reviewing SMAT. This is followed by a section in which we review how SMAT may address the KP-Lab objectives, which are described in D3.2.2 A Comprehensive Research Strategy.
