Physically embodied knowledge structures, whether these are pictures drawn in sand, painted on the wall, written and drawn as signs on paper, or digitally represented, still images or dynamic simulations. Writing and visualization are, from the psychological perspective, the most important vehicles for creating external representations. External representation constitutes an essential aspect of the External Symbolic Storage System (ESSS).
