A participant is given a problem-solving task that is at the upper boundary of his or her competence. Simultaneously, he or she is given another neutral stimulus (mediating artefact) that she may use as an auxiliary mean for solving the problem. Analysis regarding whether and how the participant uses or shapes the mediating artefact provides information about the nature of her learning and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)
